The Jewelry Store of the Future
Part Four
STORE MANAGEMENT Office equipment manufacturers are working on small, econiomic versions of electronic "brains" that will keep stock records, issue statements, and maintain accounts. The smaller retailer will be able to rent these machines from large accounting firms at a fraction of what he may spend today on keeping his own books. In a shopping center, the service may even be included in 'the fixed montly charges. Television will perform a number of retailing services in tomorrow's store. You and your customer will both talk to and see one another by means of a telephone-television hookup. In the larger store, TV will also be a common meands of surveillance against pilferage. Cameras situated at strategic points will be monitored at a central location in your office so that you can tune in on all areas of the store. The largest stores will use television to display merchandise sold in other areas in the building. AUTOMATED VENDING In 1976, your store hours may be shorter. But, thanks to vending machines that will display merchandise, receive money, make change, and then feed the full details of the entire transaction to an automatic adding machine, your customers may be able to buy certain items at any hour of the day or night. The human element in tomorrow's jewelry store will, however, not be eliminated. No electronic substitute for the human contact is anticipated. What you will gain through scientific development will be freedom from non-selling, unproductive chores. You'll chalk up more profits and devote more time to working out a still bigger and better future.
