The Inside Story of the Fine Swiss Watch
Part Six
The Hairspring and Balance Wheel work together for Accuracy. This lightest part of your watch - the hairspring - is also one of the most important. It coils and uncoils nearly half a million times a day - giving the balance wheel a tiny, exact push each time. You cannot readily see the quality of a hairspring, for it lies in the fineness of the metal, the perfection of its shape, and the precision of its adjustment to the balance wheel. Yet this tiny sliver of perfection quite frequently represents hours and hours of patient work by skilled craftsmen, and it is actually one of the most costly parts of your watch.
